Hmm, one post every 2 weeks. I suck.

Travel again.... this time to Seattle, and it is a good town for tasty nibbles. I am there for only 48 hours, so I have to cram it in.

1st night: Attempted to go to the Painted Table, which is now closed. The chef ran away and they decided to completely change the format so as not to confuse old customers. The new name is Library Bistro with a decor to match. Food was quite good, though at the moment I don't even remember what I had.

More to come....

Bleah. Business travel. The only boon is the opportunity for eating at NEW restaurants.

I was back in Minny this past week, and found with great sadness that Aquavit had closed. (I did have a guilty moment of relief at realizing that this would open up one meal for another untried restaurant...)

So, I did get to the one place I had meant to try last time - Joe's Garage - and it was completely fabulous. Upscale blue collar in a GenX friendly setting, looking northward at the downtown skyline, and westward at a lovely cathedral spire. Upscale blue collar meaning, in this case, that their trademark dish is mashed potatoes done nine ways, all from scratch. I had mine with red curry sauce, as well as a "typical" but still yummy arugula/walnut/gorgonzola/strawberry salad. Whomever thought to put balsamic vinegar on strawberries truly had a revelation.

Later that evening I decided to have a little dessert, which turned into a 3 course meal with wine and $40. Hehe. The object of my affection this time being Vincent. A worthy competitor to several other local 4-star joints. It is themeless, and casual. I was wearing fleece and never felt like I was standing apart from the rest of the crowd (who ranged from "this-is-our-anniversary-dressy" to "we-just-stopped-in-on-our-way-by-casual"). Also, the Doogie Howser-esque waiter was a lovely visual accompaniment to my plates (thanks, Colin!). A lot has already been said about this place, so I'll let you read the reviews. Regardless, this is what I had: salad with arugula, brie, walnuts, and roasted grapes; tender breaded sweetbreads with a corn cake; a glass of some red wine I've quickly forgotten; and a raspberry tart for dessert with a creamy layer of mascarpone on top of shortbread.

I will post more after my next trip.... to Seattle!

There are certain foods, certain ingredients.... that you think you don't really like, or have ignored for years. Then you have it again in its pure form (rather than soggy and canned), perfectly presented with its best natural flavor in full bloom, and you think you're gonna DIE!

Call it an epearphany.
